Re-use is the first and most important way of computer recycling. A vast amount of older computers and electronic equipment are thrown away every day because those who use them have had to upgrade to be able to run the latest software. However these computers still do what they did when people paid hundreds of pounds for them, and there are plenty of individuals and organisations out there who don’t need any more than this.

For some computer equipment however, there really is no practical use Computer technology has advanced so far that machines built four or five years ago are now obsolete this however doesn't mean that old equipment should be sent to landfills!
There are two good reasons for this. Firstly computers often contain hazardous waste (batteries for example) which can leak from landfill and cause problems such as groundwater contamination. Secondly is a question of waste. The materials from which computers are made are largely reclaimable by specialist processes. If old computers are dumped rather than recycled then these materials are wasted. The demand for new computers means that these materials will be obtained from somewhere. Every quantity which can be recycled is a quantity which doesn't have to be produced by environmentally damaging mining and manufacturing.
