For some computer equipment however, there really is no practical use Computer technology has advanced so far that machines built four or five years ago are now obsolete this however doesn't mean that old equipment should be sent to landfills!
There are two good reasons for this. Firstly computers often contain hazardous waste (batteries for example) which can leak from landfill and cause problems such as groundwater contamination. Secondly is a question of waste. The materials from which computers are made are largely reclaimable by specialist processes. If old computers are dumped rather than recycled then these materials are wasted. The demand for new computers means that these materials will be obtained from somewhere. Every quantity which can be recycled is a quantity which doesn't have to be produced by environmentally damaging mining and manufacturing.
