What is it? The Waste Electrical and the Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) came into force in January 2007. The WEE Directive also aims to both reduce the amount of electrical and electronic equipmentbeing produced and to encourage everyone to refuse, recycle and recover it. The WEEE Directive also aims to improve the environmental performance of buisnesses that manufacture, supply,use,recycle and recover electrical and electronic equipment. Waste Electrical and Electronical Equipment (WEEE) Directive The objective of the community's enviromenent policy are, in particular, to preserve, protect and improve the quality of the enviromen, protect human health and ultilise natural resources prudently and rationally. The amount of WEEE generated in the community is growing rapidly.The content of hazardous components in Electircal and Electronic Equipment (EEE) is a major concern during the waiste management phrase and recycling of WEEE is not undertakento a sufficent extent The provisions of the Directive should apply to products and producers irrespecitve of the selling technique, including distance and electronic selling. This Directive should cover all electrical and electronic equipment used by consumers and electronic equipment intended for proffesional use. The establishment, by this Direcitve, or the producer responability is one of the means of encouraging the desigm and production of electrical and electronical equipment which take into full account and facillitate their repair, possible upgrading, refuse, disassembly and recyling. Restriction of Hazadous Substances (RoHS) Diective The restriction of the use of certain hazadous substancrs in electric and elecronic equipment. Taking into account technical and economic feasibillity, the most affective way of ensuring the significant reduction to risks to health and the enviroment relating to those substances, which can achieve the chosen level of protection in the community, is the substitutionof those substances in electrical and electronic equipment by safer materials. The Restriction od the use of theese hazardous substances is likely to enhance the possibillties and economic profitability of recycling of WEEE and decreased the negative health impact on workers in recycling plants. The measures provided for in this Directive take into account exsisting international guidelines and recommendations and are based on a assesment of availiable scientific and technical information. The measures are necessary to achieve the chosen level of protection of hman and animal health and the enviroment. Member states shall determine penalities thus provided for shall be effective, proportionate and dissuasive.
